In this blog post, we will be introducing the upcoming technologies that will be invading the logistics and supply chain industry.
Trend 1: Drones overtaking warehouses
Drones could be great replacements for hard-to-configure conveyor systems within warehouses and distribution centers that are largely automated. Warehouse utilization will be improved with picking routes reconfigured at will, simply by re-programming the drones.
The volume of inventory that each Walmart UAV can scan is equivalent to the workload of 50 humans. When multiplied across Walmart’s 150-plus warehouses in the United States, one can simply imagine the amount of time and money saved by using these drones.
Trend 2: Autonomous trucks
Jensen Huang, NVIDIA founder and CEO said, “As online shopping continues to explode, and the shortage of truck drivers becomes more dire, AI-enabled vehicles will be key to providing last-mile delivery services. “
According to an analysis of a new survey of U.S. manufacturers by PwC and the Manufacturing Institute, autonomous long-haul trucks could help manufacturers to cut total transportation cost by almost 30%.
Autonomous trucks also enable manufacturers to reduce accidents caused by fatigue from long driving hours and increase productivity because it can operate all day long.
With the inclusion of third parties to handle contracts and payments, the entire supply chain process becomes lengthy and inconvenient.
Blockchain has the ability to cut down on lengthy procedures by removing the middlemen and shortening the duration to complete a transaction because the key members of the supply chain can deal directly with each other. History of all transactions are recorded making it easy for tracking which in turn cuts down on fraud and costs too. Each new block of transactions is linked back to previous blocks across multiple computers thus, tampering is almost impossible.
